A giant sized, variable, erect, cool to warm growing epiphytic or terrestrial species found in Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Windwards, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina in wet tropical forests up to 2100 meters in elevation with clustered, terete stems enveloped by grey to brown leaf-sheaths carrying lanceolate, thin in texture, acute, purplish, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the summer but can occur at other times in a year on a loose, to several feet long, terminal raceme or panicle with lanceolate, acute bracts at the base of each branch with a few to many fragrant, variable in color, flowers opening in succession over a long period of time.
