Common Name Wallich's Phaius [Danish Botanist and Orchid Collector 1800's] - In China Da Hua He Ding Lan

Flower Size 5.6" [14 cm]

Found in India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka the eastern Himalayas, Assam, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Yunnan China, Hong Kong and possibly Sumatra in dense forests along ravines at elevations of 900 to 1300 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with fusiform to cylindric-ovoid pseudobulbs carrying about 4, green, oblong-elliptic, plicate, glabrous, acuminate leaves that blooms in the later spring on an erect, glabrous, to 40" [100 cm] long, to more than 10 flowered inflorescence arising from the lower nodes on the pseudobulb and has caducous, ovate-lanceolate, glabrous floral bracts and carrying widely opening flowers

The plants are very different from P tankervilleae 1. They are much larger, the pseudobulbs are up to 4.8" [12 cm]tall 2. The inflorescence is over 6 feet [180 cm] tall, carrying 16 or more large flowers 3. The flowers face forward whereas in P tankervilleae looks down 4. The base colour of the flowers is an ochre yellow-with a yellow brown overlay P tankervilleae is white 5. The lip is different.
