Common Name The Two-Horned Hapalorchis [refers to the basal horn-like auricles of the lip]
Flower Size .12" [3 mm]
Found in Antioquia department of Colombia in disturbed, humid montane forests at elevations around 2190 meters as a miniature sized, cold growing trerrestrial with clustered, fleshy, fusiform roots giving rise to up to 5, gathered in a basal rosette, reaching the base of the raceme, elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic-ovate, green with reddish green veins above, light green beneath, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the later summer on an erect, terminal, peduncle, to 4.4" [11 cm] long, delicate, glandular, provided with 3 to 4, tubular, acuminate, thin, slightly shorter than the internodes sheathing bracts, rachis to 1.2" [3 cm] long, laxly to 5 flowered inflorescence with ovate, acuminate, thin, about twice as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying non resupinate flowers with basally, sparsely glandular tepals.
"A unique feature, not found in any other species of Hapalorchis, is the presence of horn-like auricles at the base of the lip. The new species is similar to H piesiki and Hapalorchis trilobata by its non-resupinate flowers; however, H. bicornis is easily distinguished from both species by the sparsely glandular ovary. The additional difference between the new species and H. trilobata is the shape of the epichile (elliptic vs ligulate-oblong)." Kolan. & Szlach. 2013
