Common Name The Short Myrosmodes
Flower Size Minute
Found in Antioquia department of Colombia, Pichincha and Chimborazo provinces of Ecuador and Junin department of Peru in wetlands, shrub paramo, and lake borders at elevations of 3450 to 4300 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cold growing terrestrial with when present, fasciculate, fleshy, elliptic, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the later spring summer on an erect, short, 1.6 to 2.2" [4 to 5.5 cm] long, enveloped completely by densely imbricating, funnel-shped sheaths, terminated by a conical, many flowered inflorescence with hyaline, from a cuneate base, transversly elliptic with erose-denticulate margin, a bit shorter than the flowers floral bracts and carrying glabrous flowers.
"The illustration of the lectotype showed here is based on one of the flowers kept in the envelope of the herbarium sheet [see above]. The flower illustrated from the lectotype [lead drawing] showed three differences with the flower illustrated by Schlechter: the petals margins are not irregular dentate (just slightly irregular on the apex), the calli on the base of lip are not evident and lip is orbicular-ovate instead of rhombic. Schweinfurth (1958) placed this species as a synonym of Altensteinia [Myrosmodes] paludosa : however, they represent different species. Myrosmodes brevis can be distinguished from M. paludosa by its long-rostrate ovary, clawed base lip, and a thin and relatively longer column .12 long versus .088" (3.0 mm long vs. 2.2 mm in M. paludosa). Myrosmodes brevis is similar to M. rhynchocarpa (both belong to the subgenus Rhynchocarpaea) from which it differs by its long and thin column, and lip base distinctly clawed."
