Alphabetical search! Use your back button to return.

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the author of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the author of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Phaius Lour. 1790 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Collabieae, SUBTRIBE Collabiinae

This genus is composed of 46 species widespread through Madagascar to the Philippines and the Pacific Islands. It is a larger sized genus that for the most part has a pleasing vegetative appearance even out of bloom. They are mostly shade loving terrestrials with a few epiphytes and generally like even watering [see individual species listing]. When in their growth phase weekly fertilizer is recommended year round. Phaius are sympodial with a highly variable plant size. The pseudobulbs are small with new growths arising from the base of the pseudobulb or from the rhizome. They have large plicate leaves that can be ruffled as well and generally have a pretty out of bloom appearance. The inflorescence arises from the base of the old pseudobulb or from the rhizome and has racemose flowers held at the end of the spike. The tepals are similar and rather fleshy, the erect, 3 lobed, saccate to spurred lip is connate only at or near the base of the column and embrace it and the disc is variously ridged. The column is long and stout without a foot or obsure. The anther is incompletly four-lobuled and the 8, waxy pollina are in 2 groups of 4 and are attached to a large granular viscus. Phaius in general have large showy flowers with a pleasant fragrance. New plants can be obtained from the old spikes, just lay the spike out in a plastic flat filled with sand and half cover them. Keep in a shady moist area and in 1-2 months the new plants will appear from the nodes of the spike. The Phaius from Madagascar are also listed in the genus Gastorchis and in the list below are noted with an *.

Phalaenopsis Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

This is a vandaceous genus comprised of 83, mostly epiphytic and some lithophytic species spread throughout most all of Asia east of India and the Pacific to the Philippines and south to Australia. It is a monopodial with large succulent, drooping leaves with short stems, giving rise off the stem from among the leaves to an inflorescence which can have a few to a hundred flowers with a distinct 3-lobed clawed lip. The parts of the Phalaenopsis flower are, column {#1}, lateral lobe of labellum {#2}, mid lobe of the labellum {#3}, labellum {#4}, dorsal sepal {#5}, petals {#6}, lateral sepal {#7} They grow best in pots with a wood media or from wood slat baskets hung sideways with two wires. They like good air circulation and a minimum of light.

Common Name or Meaning refers to being similar to a moth

Pholidota Lindley ex Hooker 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Podochileae, SUBTRIBE Coelogyninae.

A mid-sized lithophytic or epiphitic orchid with a creeping or pendant rhizome makes up the 41 species of this genus that are spread from India to South China, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea as well as the Pacific Islands and south to Australia. They are commonly refered to as rattlesnake-tail orchids. The genus has close to distant, slender to swollen pseudobulbs carrying 1 to 2, narrowly elliptic, ovate to oblong, petiolate, coriaceous to herbaceous leaves blooming on a terminal, slender, racemose, distichous, pendant, laxly to densely many flowered inflorescence with large, concave floral bracts and carries small, fleshy, resupinate to non-resupinate flowers with a concave to convex, broadly ovate to elliptic dorsal sepal with concave to convex, ovate to ovate-oblong, often keeled lateral sepals and ovate to linear petals. They have a sessile, basally saccate epichile, sub-entire to 3 to 4 lobed, deflexed lip with a short, apically hooded column with 4, subglobose to clavate pollina that are free or cohering in pairs by a viscus.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the scaled perianths

Phragmipedium Rolfe 1896 SUBFAMILY Cypripedioideae

There are from 29 species in this new world terrestrial or epiphytic genus found from mid-Central America south to mid-South America, with several being discovered in just the last 5 years. These tropical American species were removed from the Paphiopedilum in 1896 by Rolfe creating the genus Phragmipedium. They are sympodial plants with short stems, fibrous roots, with fan shaped groups of 6 to 8 coriaceous leaves that can become 3 feet long, that give rise to a central, erect, multi-flowered inflorescence with a free dorsal sepal, united lateral sepals that form into a synsepalum and the labellum is sac shaped or like a slipper.

They like shady humid conditions with even water and fertilizer year round with plenty of air circulation.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the separated wall in the ovary

Phreatia Lindl. 1830. SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Podochileae, SUBTRIBE Thelassinae.

More than 206 species make up this epiphytic genus found mostly in Papua and New Guinea but also found in SE Asia, Indonesia and Australia. This genus has pseudobulbous to cauline stems carrying 1 to 3 or to 12 [caulescent species], distichous to flabellate, erect to spreading, often fleshy leaves that are jointed on equitant sheaths and blooms on a lateral, axillary [from stem base], racemose, densely many flowered inflorescence with minute, resupinate, pale green to white, sometimes self pollinating, with similar, spreading sepals and petals with the lateral sepals adnate to the column foot with 8 pollina with a long stipe and an ovate viscidium.
