HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Sievekingia Rchb.f. 1871 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Gongoreae, SUBTRIBE Stanhopeinae.

There are 14 species of dwarf epiphytes or lithophytes in this genus allied to the Gongoreae that have grooved pseudobulbs with a single, apical, plicate leaf giving rise to a basal, arching or pendulous inflorescence. It has nonresupinate, medium sized flowers with petals that are smaller than the sepals while the lip is simple or three lobed and carries variously shaped, dentate calli. There are two pollina witha stipe and a viscidium. They are best grown in small slat baskets with moderate shade, ample year round water and light fertilizer at regular intervals.

Sigmatostalix Rchb.f. 1852 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillareae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae

There are 31 species of this epiphytic genus found from Mexico to Brazil and from sea level to 3000 meters and is allied to the genus Leochilus, but differs in that, the anther is not produced in front into a membranaceous appendage longer than the lobule. This genus typically has an elongated, arcuate column that gives it a superficial resemblance to the genus Cycnoches although there is no relationship between the two genera. The genus is characterized by being small epiphyes with compressed, clustered pseudobulbs with basal sheaths and one or rarely two apical leaves. The basal inflorescence arises from the basal sheaths and is a compound raceme or panicle of a few to several, rather small flowers with free sepals which occasionally are reflexed. The clawed or sessile lip often has a very prominent callus or a series of calli that can be hollowed out and contain a thick liquid. The slender and arched column has well developed wings or ventral cavities carrying two pollina with a long stipe and a viscidium.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the long and bent 'c' or 's' shaped column

Sobralia Ruiz and Pavon 1794 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Sobraliinae.

There are 100 some species spread throughout the tropics of Mexico to South America that are epiphytic terrestrial herbs withqually obtusely bilobed apically leaves that blooms on a simple, reedlike stems which give rise to an inflorescence from the apex of the reedstem with 1 or 2 flowers that on the whole are very short lived. The genus is characterized by being large terrestrials having reedlike stems with plicate leaves all along the stem, and a terminal or lateral, short, single to several, large flowered inflorescence. The flowers have similar, largeals and petals and are most often outspread with an entire or lobed lip which clasps the column at its base being footless and apically winged which project forward, carrying 8, soft pollina.Water heavily while in growth and less while dormant.

A genus with 2 to 3 miniature epiphytic species occuring in northern South America that is closely allied to Oncidium. The genus is characterized by being medium-sized plants with elongated pseudobulbs with one or two apical leaves. It gives rise to an erect, lateral raceme of several small flowers with similar sepals and petals, a lip with a narrow base and two parallel downy calli that extend the length to the apex which broadens out without lobes. The winged column has two stipitate pollina. They are warm growing epiphytes found in Northern South America.

` Soterosanthus Lehman ex Jenny 1986

SUBFAMILY Epidendroidea, TRIBE Gongoreae, SUBTRIBE Stanhopeinae.

This genus, previously listed as Sievekingia and discovered in 1915 by Rolfe, is a monotypic genus and was separated from Sievekingia because of it's erect, downy inflorescence and by the form of the plant overall including round psuedobulbs and grayish green leaves with reddish undersides and the absence of keels and bristles on its lip. It also is different in that it has on its lip an erect, column-like callus with hairs instead of non-erect glabrous keels. I can attest that it is a warm grower as mine bloomed in July for 5 days and was fairly impressive for the size of the flowers in comparison to the plant. I raised it in wood chips with Fennel rock which is a type of expanded shale. This plant is available through Klehms nursery. There are only two published photos of this plant published to date and they are both by Pedro Ortiz and the Colombian Orchid Society #1 Orquideas Ornamentales de Colombia #2 Native Colombian Orchids Vol4 [Vols 1-6 available] I love these books for there coverage of Colombia where I often visit because my wife has family there. Other than these references you must look at Curtis's Botanical Magazine 141:t8635. 1915 for any previous mention of this plant. My references are the above numbered books. So all in all I have a fairly rare plant up for the world to see.

Spathoglottis Blume 1825

SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Arethuseae, SUBTRIBE Bletiinae

This genus has 63 terrestrial species, widespread, ranging from Southern China south to The Philippines and west to Malaysia and Indonesia with the heaviest concentration in New Guinea. It is also an invasive genus in Hawaii to the east, as just in modern times has it been establishing a stronghold. They have ovoid, depressed psuedobulbs that carry a few folded, plicate, narrow leaves. They have a tall, thin inflorescence that arises from the basal leaf axil and have many successesive flowers that open over many months. These can be grown outside in the ground in South Florida gardens and culture is the same as for Phaius. They appreciate full sun and copius water and fertilizer after the new leads have appeared.

Spiculaea Lindl. 1840 SUBFAMILY Orchidoideae, TRIBE Diurideae, SUBTRIBE Drakaeinae

SPICULEA (spiked column wings) CILIATA (soft hairs on the labellum). This remarkable orchid is the product of a much harsher environment than that of the present. It has adapted to survive, flower and reproduce in the summer months (November to January) when all surface moisture is absent. It is widely distributed inland to the goldfields and west to the Darling Scarp where it grows in thin layers of moss and soil on and around granite sheets of rock. To withstand the environmental hazards, the leaf and stem dry off from the base upward to force the sap up the succulent stem enabling the buds to open in turn. This survival trait is demonstrated well when a plant can be plucked, placed in a letter and sent by post without any protection half way across the world to the USA or to Europe, and when received the buds will continue to open. The pollinating strategy is similar to that of the Drakea where the insect imitating labellum is attached to a wiry stem hinged in the centre. Although not sensitive it can only move in the direction of the column (as with Drakea) and achieves pollination via pseudo-copulation. The male wasps, attempting to carry off the sham female, are carried forward and guided by the spiked column wings either to transfer pollen to the stigma or to be daubed with pollen to be carried to another plant. A truly remarkable orchid. Ron Heberle April 2003

Spiranthes L. C. Rich. 1817 SUBFAMILY Spiranthoideae, TRIBE Cranichideae, SUBTRIBE Spiranthinae.

There are approximately 50 species of this terrestrial, or rarely epiphytic or lithophytic genus which are spread through all the temperate parts of the globe. They have tuberous or heavily fibrous roots and insignificant leaves and a inflorescence that arises out of the middle of the leaves that are elongate racemes of flowers arranged in a spiral fashion. Culture is highly varied and location of the species should be known to apply proper culture.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the spiral form the flower take on the raceme
