HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

`Ancistrochilus Rolfe 1897 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Arethuseae, SUBTRIBE Bletiinae.

Two species comprise this African genus that ranges from tropical West Africa to Uganda and Tanzania and grows as an epiphyte and loses it's leaves after growth has slowed. At this time the inflorescences should appear from the base of the mature bulb. From after flowering till the appearance of a new lead very little water should be given.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the hook-like bend to the lip

Ancistrorhynchus Finet 1907SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandaeae, SUBTRIBE Angraecinae

There are less than 16 species in tropical Africa as large or small, monopodial epiphytes with long or [more often] short stems and linear, bilobed apically leaves that have the lobes and sometimes sides dentate which is unique to this genus. The short, densly flowered inflorescence arise from the base of the plant from old scarious leaf sheaths and give rise to many white and green flowers with sepals and petals similar, a larger, entire or occasionally faintly trilobed lip, with a wide mouthed, basal spur which is often swollen at the apex often with a bend in the middle, a very short column, a downward pointing rostellum that is bent in the middle so the apex is pointed upwards, 2 pollina and a single viscidium held in small dense clusters of greeen and white flowers held at stem height.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the hook shaped rostellum

Angraecopsis Kraenzel 1900 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandaeae, SUBTRIBE Angraecinae

Sixteen species make up this principally tropical African genus, but is also found in Madagascar, Comoros and Mascarene Islands as well, that are dwarf epiphytic orchids with short leafy stems and long inflorescences with small spidery flowers that have 2 pollina and are grown the same as Angraecum.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the genus resembling Angraecum

Angraecum Bory 1804 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandaeae, SUBTRIBE Angraecinae

The 200 species that make up the genus Angraecum are spread through out tropical Africa, The Comoros Islands, The Seychelles, The Mascarenes and Madagascar from sealevel to 2000 meters. They require a wood slat basket, high humidity, moderate shade, and ample water while in growth and less when not, but never allow to dry out for long periods. They are miniature to large epiphytic, monopodial, strap leafed, with a lateral, axillary, racemose, inflorescence with one to many flowers. The flowers are mostly white in color, sometimes yellow, green or ochre and they are as a rule longlasting and some are fragrant and they all have a long spur at the back of the lip.

Common Name or Meaning refers in Malaysian to it's Vanda-like appearance

Anguloa Ruiz and Pavon 1794 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Lycastinae.

This small genus of ten terrestrial or sometimes epiphytic species is found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru and has large, fleshy pseudobulbs that have large, plicate, imbricate, deciduous leaves. The single flowered inflorescence arises from the base of the new pseudobulb as a new growth begins. The flower is large, showy, fleshy and cup shaped with a 3 lobed lip and 4 pollina that moves within the sepals and petals. These species need a cool warm to cold environment with some shade, high humidity and lots of fertilizer while growing. They need a 2 to 3 week dry rest in the late winter. Resume water and fertilizer after simultaneous initiation of the new growth and the new inflorescence.

Common Name or Meaning named for Francisco de Angulo, Peruvian orchid enthusiast - Cradle Orchid - Tulip Orchid - In Colombia Cuna de Venus

Apostasia Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Apostasoioideae

There are 15 or so species in this terrestrial genus from Se Asia and Australia that produce erect, sometimes branching, thin stems from underground rhizomes. The stems have many well-spaced, narrow, non-plicate, often filiform apically because the margins are rolled inwards. The often branched, horizontal or stiffly pendulous inflorescence carry often widely open, similar sepals and petals in shape and size, has a primitive, straight to curved column carrying 2 to sometimes 3 stamen.

Common Name or Meaning The Division [refers to the exclusion by many of this genus from the Orchidaceae]

It is a monopodial plant that blooms from the apex of the leaves and grows as a terrestrial. The flowers are resuoinate, large and showy and have free narrow sepals, an erect dorsal sepal, and lateral sepals close together behind the lip, and has free, spreading, broad petals. The trumpet-shaped, spurless lip has lateral lobes that envelop the column and has an emarginate apex, a 3 keeled disc, a footless column and 8 pollina. It is best grown in the same manner as Sobralia.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the reed-like shape of the leaves

Ascidieria Seidenf. 1984 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Podochileae, SUBTRIBE Eriinae.

This genus stood as a monotypic for years but recently a second was added. The genus was segregated for Eria on the basis of the cymbiform lip as well as the lateral sepals are attached directly to the base of the column and there is no column foot. It has, as does Eria, 8 pollina and the same growth habit as the Section Aeridostachya.

Ascocentrum Schlecter ex J.J. Smith 1914 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

Ascocentrum has about seven species in Asia and the Philippines that are compact, vanda-like plants and have upright inflorescence with dense cones of smaller flowers. Most of these plants are warm to intermediate growers that like slat basket culture with little or no potting media. This genus is commonly crossed onto Vanda thereby creating the man made genus Ascocenda. The small flowers open widely and have similar sepals and petals, a 3 lobed, immobile, adnate to the column base and slghtly adnate to the base of the lateral lobes, spurred but not keeled, midlobe oblong, porrect or decurved, thickening at the mouth of the base of the mid lobe lip and has a short, lacking a foot column with2 cleft pollina and a short stipe.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the lip spur
