Welcome to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia

Alphabetical search! Use your back button to return.

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the author of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the author of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Daiotyla Dressler 2005 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Zygopetalinae.

There are 4 species that were segregated from Chondrorhynha because of having " small flowers with large callus mounds that are easily seen from a front view of the flower" according to Patrica Harding. The plants are comparable to Stenia, which it is closer than Chondrohyncha by molecular data, and generally only have 2 to 3, dark green without gray leaves with a few basal sheaths. The dorsal sepal is thick and concave especially towards the apex and it has the appearance of a hook. The lateal sepals are thin and concave and reflex backwards and also appear hooklike, and in some species actually from tubes on either side of the column. The petals are held parrelell to the column and reflex apically. The dorsal sepal and the petals envelop the column so as to form a tube-like or bell-shaped appearance. The lip has a basal callus made up of 2 easily visible mounds that extend to the mid length of the lip, they are joined basally and along most of their length only divided apically by a notch of varying length. The pollina consists of 4 flattened, 2 different sized balls and are attached to a well -developed stipe with a sheild shaped viscidium.

Dendrobium Sw. 1799 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE ?, SUBTRIBE Dendrobiinae.

Dendrobium is the second largest genus after Bulbophyllum with over 1200 species ranging through all parts of Asia and the Pacific and is the second most common orchid genera in cultivation after the Cattleyas. Characterized by a cane-like, epiphytic and sometimes lithophytic, sympodial, pseudobulbs that can be any size or shape, with flowers that last for 1 day to months. They are found from India east through all of Asia and up into China and then out through all the Pacific islands including Australia to the south. It is a very diverse group and potting and cultural requirements need to be customized for each species individual environment. The parts of the Dendrobium flower are as follows, #1, Dorsal sepal, #2, petal, #3, sepal, #4, labellum, #5, column.

Common Name or Meaning refers to this genus epiphytic nature

Characterized by the tall, leafy, evenly swollen stem with a generally single, terminal on a leafy stem, tight, many flowered inflorescence enveloped by distinctive imbricate bracts. The outer surface of the flowers, the stems and in some cases the leaves are covered with a brown furfuraceous covering. The flowers do not open well and they are often yellow on the exterior and mostly white inside, and there is a more or less ovate, fleshy lip without much if any sidelobes, a shelflike retrose lamina on the lip with a saclike mentum opposite the cavity on the column foot and in most cases the lip is papillose.
