Welcome to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia
Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the author of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the author of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Dactylorhiza Necker ex Nevski 1937 SUBFAMILY Orchidoideae, TRIBE Orchideae, SUBTRIBE Orchidinae.
There are 111, deciduous, terrestrial species in this pan-global genus. They are characterized by having 2 to 3, flat, lobed, tapering tubers, giving rise to linear to lanceolate, glabrous green, sometimes purple spotted leaves with subcylindric to rounded inflorescence with leafless bracts occuring in temperate, North America, Asia, northern Africa, and Europe. There are 2 clavate pollina with a prominent caudicle each adherent to a viscidium or virtually naked viscidia
Common Name or Meaning Cuckoo Flower - refers to the finger-like root nodules
Synonyms Dactylorchis (Klinge) Vermeulen 1947
Type species = ! = Orchis umbrosa Karelin & Kir. 1842 = Dactylorhiza umbrosa (Kar. & Kir.) Nevski 1937
Groupings of the genus
Spindle shaped tubers, stoloniferous stems, sepals and petals connivent to form a loose hood
Flattened, near entirely to shortly palmate tubers a hollow stem carrying unspotted leaves, monohyletic group of 5 species seem rather close to Orchis pallens subgroup
Flattened, long digitate tubers, with a hollow stem, an entire, long or longer than broad lip that is often rhomboidal and rather small. Found in both Europe and Asia and containing at least 15 species.
With hollow stems carrying often broad, rather large, spotted leaves that flowers early, before D incarnata.
witha slender, not very compressible stem and carrying a few, narrow leaves and not so numerous flowers, often rather large, a longitudinally folded lip, and a large spur and flowering between the D incarnata and D praetemissa groups.
Ofen robust, with a thick hollow stem with often large, unspotted t ospotted on upper side with numerous flowers, later flowering than previous 3 groups
With a slender, rarely slighly hollow stem carryingspotted on upper side, normally developed, often clustered in the lower third of the stem leaves. A eurosiberian group with 2 subgroups, The D fuchsii subgroup that is mainly associated with alkaline substrates and the D maculata subgroup that is mainly associated with acidophilous substrates.

Daiotyla Dressler 2005 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Zygopetalinae.
There are 4 species that were segregated from Chondrorhynha because of having " small flowers with large callus mounds that are easily seen from a front view of the flower" according to Patrica Harding. The plants are comparable to Stenia, which it is closer than Chondrohyncha by molecular data, and generally only have 2 to 3, dark green without gray leaves with a few basal sheaths. The dorsal sepal is thick and concave especially towards the apex and it has the appearance of a hook. The lateal sepals are thin and concave and reflex backwards and also appear hooklike, and in some species actually from tubes on either side of the column. The petals are held parrelell to the column and reflex apically. The dorsal sepal and the petals envelop the column so as to form a tube-like or bell-shaped appearance. The lip has a basal callus made up of 2 easily visible mounds that extend to the mid length of the lip, they are joined basally and along most of their length only divided apically by a notch of varying length. The pollina consists of 4 flattened, 2 different sized balls and are attached to a well -developed stipe with a sheild shaped viscidium.

Dendrobium Sw. 1799 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE ?, SUBTRIBE Dendrobiinae.
Dendrobium is the second largest genus after Bulbophyllum with over 1200 species ranging through all parts of Asia and the Pacific and is the second most common orchid genera in cultivation after the Cattleyas. Characterized by a cane-like, epiphytic and sometimes lithophytic, sympodial, pseudobulbs that can be any size or shape, with flowers that last for 1 day to months. They are found from India east through all of Asia and up into China and then out through all the Pacific islands including Australia to the south. It is a very diverse group and potting and cultural requirements need to be customized for each species individual environment. The parts of the Dendrobium flower are as follows, #1, Dorsal sepal, #2, petal, #3, sepal, #4, labellum, #5, column.
Common Name or Meaning refers to this genus epiphytic nature

Characterized by the tall, leafy, evenly swollen stem with a generally single, terminal on a leafy stem, tight, many flowered inflorescence enveloped by distinctive imbricate bracts. The outer surface of the flowers, the stems and in some cases the leaves are covered with a brown furfuraceous covering. The flowers do not open well and they are often yellow on the exterior and mostly white inside, and there is a more or less ovate, fleshy lip without much if any sidelobes, a shelflike retrose lamina on the lip with a saclike mentum opposite the cavity on the column foot and in most cases the lip is papillose.
