HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Fernandezia Ruiz & Pavon 1798 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Pachyphyllinae. A Central American and South American genus of less than 9 species that are all high Andean, monopodial epiphytes with distichous leaves, the bright colored flowers are produced singly in succession, with the sepals and petals free, having a saccate lip at the base, th broadly winged column clasping the callus of the lip, and the 2 pollina with caudicles that are longer than the stipe which in turn is attached to the viscidium. These plants are epiphytes found at elevations of 2500 to 3200 meters in extremely wet cloudforests. They are related to Dichaea and are quite rare.

Flickingeria A.D. Hawkes 1961 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Dendrobieae, SUBTRIBE Dendrobiinae.

There are 60 to 70 species spread throughout SE Asia and Indonesia and out to the Philippines, Australia and the Pacific Islands in this epiphytic genus that was removed from Dendrobium. The flowers are ephemeral and thin-textured with subsimilar sepals, the laterals oblique, adnate basally to form a chin-like mentum with the column foot, the petals are narrower than the sepasl and the lip is complex, 3 lobed, the hypochile is short, concave and has 2 erect laterel lobes, the mesochile is oblong and clawed, the epichile is bi-lobed, transversly oblong to reniform, often pleated to lacerate, and has 2 to 3 raised, longitudinal lammelae that form a callus. The column is short, fleshy and has a distinct foot and carries 4 pollina in 2 appressed pairsThe plants can be grown like Dendrobium but have ephemeral flowers which last less than 1 day.

Galeandra Lindley 1832 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Cyrtopodiinae.

There are 26 species of this deciduous terrestrial or epipyhte found throughout the American tropics. They are characterized by having fusiform psuedobulbs, narrow, distichous, plicate leaves that are articulated to sheaths, a terminal racemose or paniculate inflorescence that gives rise to showy flowers with the seapls and petals free and a tubular lip with a prominent basal spur and a short foot on the column and 4 pollina. They need shady conditions and copious water while growing and then a tapering off as they bloom followed by a cool and dry winter rest with just enough misting to keep the psuedobulbs from shriveling.

There are 11 species found in this genus and 6 of those are found in Colombia. As a whole they are hot to cool, humid growing plants that need basket culture to accomodate the rapid growth of the psuedobulbs and leaves. The inflorescence arises from the axils of the newly developing shoot. They have plicate leaves, a fan-shaped callus, a three-lobed lip a fimbriate margin to the lip and four hard pollina connected to a quadrate stipe.

Gastrochilus D. Don 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

There are 20 some species of Gastrochilus distributed in India to Eastern Asia and south to Malaysia and the nearby islands. It is a monopodial short to long stemmed that grows epiphyticly and is similar to Aerides in appearance with coriaceous, distichous leaves giving rise to a short inflorescence with few fleshy flowers massed close together. This genus was described by David Don in 1825 and his type species was Gastrochilus calceolaris syn. Aerides calceolaris. This genus has been moved into Aerides and Saccolabbium through the years but Holttum, Garay and Seidenfadden keep it separate in reviews in 1964,72, and 88 respectively. Moderate shade and high humidity given to a wood mount or slat basket with free watering in it's growing season will result in a healthy plant. After blooming less water and fertilizer should be applied.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the bulging lip and it's affinity to a beer belly

Closely allied to the genus Glomera these epiphytic or lithophytic plant have their center of distribution in New Guinea but are also found in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia. Some 60 species have been described. The plants can form dense spreading masses. The stems can be erect or pendulous, usually slender and branched. The terminal inflorescence carries one flower, mostly white with yellowish tips to the sepals and petals. Flowers can be fragrant. These species are found from tropical lowland forest up to high montane mist forests.

Gomesa R Brown 1815 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillareae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae.

This genus is endemic to Brazil and is comprised of twenty species that can be grouped into 3 distinct sections.

1. G. crispa alliance - Short rhizomes, close set psuedobulbs, and free lateral sepals.

2. G. recurva alliance - Short rhizome, close set psuedobulbs, and lateral sepals that are more or less connate.

3. G. glaziovii alliance - Long rhizomes, large space between psuedobulbs. They need shady humid intermediate conditions with regular watering while growing and then after the psuedobulbs are mature just enough water to keep the psuedobulbs from shriveling. They are epiphytic plants that have an inflorescnce that arises from the side of the psuedobulbs as in the genera, Odontoglossum and Oncidium.

Gongora Ruiz and Pavon 1794 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Stanhopeinae.

The 52 species of this genus are spread from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil. These plants have mostly pendant inflorescences so a basket of some sort is called for. They also do not like to dry out so water and fertilize regularly and grow under intermediate to warm conditions. They are part of the Stanhopea subtribe and grow from sea level up to 1000 meters in elevation. They have ribbed ovoid psuedobulbs with 2 to 3 apical thin, heavily veined leaves. The inflorescence arises from the base of the psuedobulb and hangs with many non resupinate, upside down flowers on a pendant spike. These plants are epiphytes and many are found in association with ant nests. The parts of the Gongora flower are as follows, pedicel {#1}, lateral sepals {#2}, labellum {#3}, petals {#4}, column {#5}, and the dorsal sepal {#6}.

There are 40 terrestrial species that are widely distributed throughout temperate and tropical Americas, S. E. Asia, the Pacific Islands, New Guinea, Australia and Madagascar. The genus is mainly terrestrial but occasionally found as an epiphyte with a creeping rhizome, an eret, leafy stem, basal or clustered, several, fleshy, usually petiolate, occasionally reticulate leaves and bloom on erect, terminal, few to many flowered, racemose, often pubescent inflorescence with small, often secund, pubescent or glandular, with sepals parellel to the floral axis, a dorsal sepal that forms a hood with the petals and a unlobed lip that is hollow or saccate basally. The short column has a long, deeply cleft rostellum, a large undivided stigma, 2 often deeply cleft, granulose, pyriform to clavate pollina and an elongate viscidium.

Govenia Lindl. in Lodd. 1832 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Goveniinae.

There are eighteen terrestrial and sometimes epiphytic species that can be cultivated best as for the Bletia. They range from Central to Central South America with one species found in the Caribbean. There is considerable color variations eveident within each species. This genus is characterized by the corm-like pseudobulbs surrounded by leaf sheaths, the strongly petiolate leaf bases, subopposite pair of leaves with thin, heavily veined leaves with a terminal inflorescence giving rise to flowers with free sepals and petals, a thin lip, a column with a foot, and four hard pollina.

Grammatophyllum Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Cyrtopodiinae.

The genus Grammatophylum is made up of 11 to 12 species in SE Asia, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Phillipines and the SW Pacific. The genus was first described by Blume in 1825 using Grammatophylum speciosum as the type species. These plants are all medium to large epiphytics with two distinct growth patterns. One pattern is a cane like growth giving rise to many leaves while the other has thick squat psuedobulbs that have a few leaves borne from the apex. The flowers to both types are similar having showy large, olive green, brown, or yellow flowers on long arching, racemose inflorescences. The flowers have large showy sepals and petals with a smaller lip that has 3 low keels. The column is short with 2 pollina and a crescent shaped viscidium. These plants are some of the orchids largest and as such, thought must be put into the raising of them if space is limited. If the space can be given these plants put on quite a 3 month display if given some direct sunlight and lots of fertilizer in the growing season. They can be grown in pots or hanging baskets but remember they can double their size in 1 year.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the letter patterns on the flowers
